a review by Ed OBrien, renowned author and
authority on the music of Frank Sinatra, on the occasion
of the release of the first issue of the Where or When
Database: The Where or When Sinatra Database is quite simply WONDERFUL. I have never seen a better researched, more comprehensive, more intelligently collated reference work. I recommend that all serious collectors of Sinatra claim a copy immediately. Through the years there have been a few attempts to chronicle the complete work of Sinatra, as recording artist. They have always been found wanting for a variety of reasons. Now we have a work that offers all of his radio work that is known, all of his concerts, TV appearances, benefits, awards, recordings, sessions, parodies, interviews and so on............. I urge all of you to acquire this marvelous effort. I have been researching Sinatra and his music for many years and this is the best overall effort out there. Truly a must-have for all who care about Sinatra and his music. From a review by Gordon Sapsed in "Perfectly Frank", the journal of the Sinatra Music Society. ......Do you "know your Sinatra" or thrive on detailed information, even trivia, about The Man and his Music? "Where or When" could be just what you have been looking for. ......The 100 Megabytes or so of information is initially copied from the CD-ROM onto your computer's hard disc and the CD-ROM is no longer required. The set-up process is handled automatically. I installed my copy in about 5 minutes on a Windows XP computer and it also worked succesfully on an Intel MAC computer with a Windows XP partition. .......Conclusion: "Where or When" is a cornucopia of information about Sinatra's music. It offers vastly more content than any other Sinatra database I am aware of. From an article by Bernhard Vogel, well-known Sinatra expert and President of the German Sinatra Society: ...........Documenting the Sinatra catalogue is a very serious business. But how to publish all the data and information? Who would be ready to buy a multi-volume 10.000-plus paged Sinatra encyclopedia? And how to cope with the fact that any printed publication, given the continuing load of Sinatra releases world-wide, would be outdated already the next day? The ultimate discography was a task that could virtually never be accomplished. With the arrival of digital media however, the situation has changed. Today, the whole Encyclopedia Brittanica fits onto a single CD-Rom..... And so does Where or When-The Definitive Sinatra Database, a most exciting new CD-Rom release that will very easily turn out to be a true landmark in Sinatra research, serving normalcollectors and scholars alike........ Where or When consists of two different parts. The Chronology part, compiled by Giuseppe Marcucci of Italy, presents by far the most detailed chronological documentation on Sinatras work hitherto available. The main section lists all known Sinatra performances with all known details from 1933 to 1995, including studio recordings, soundtrack recordings, radio and TV shows (including guest appearances), live concerts, and promos in chronological order: Sinatra date by date, including all details available, such as orchestra personnel, song programs, record releases, arrangers, conductors, composers, show titles, concert venues etc........Another main chapter dubbed Songs lists all songs ever performed by Sinatra and provides dates, venues etc. for every single known performance of a song, be it captured on record/tape or not. When did he sing a certain song for the first time, or the last, in his career? How many times did he do a certain song? Did he ever perform at a certain location? Answers galore. The Discographypart, compiled by Dick Schwarz of Holland and Ed Vanhellemont of Belgium, is completely interactive, providing a search engine especially developed for this project. It contains all available details (titles, dates, venues, labels, master numbers, release numbers, timings, alternate takes with detailed differentiation clues etc.) of all USA records that contain Sinatra tracks(78 & 45 rpm, V-discs, Microgrooves, 7 jukebox, 10& 12 LPs, CDs, all kind of Promos, Picture discs etc.), plus all known Sinatra LPs and CDs ever issued worldwide. .......For many of these records, especially in the non-studio field, exact track identification is available for the first time ever, and by carefully listening to each and every single record, the publishers have been able to correct many errors and omissions in liner notes and previously printed references. You can easily print out all research results, thus create whatever references you might be interested in. .....With Where or When being on the market, the days of enervating errors in whatever Sinatra-related radio and television broadcasts, and future printed publications and CD booklets, should definitely be over. ...... Installation on your computer system is very easy to handle and the database is compatible with all PC systems (Windows 95/98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7). There are detailed installation notes (just be very sure to follow these exactly), as well as further guidelines and examples that explain how to use the search engine to maximum effect, and the website also offers an extra helpline for technical support. |
